Toilet Installation
Installing a new toilet may seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and a little knowledge, it can be a simple home improvement project. Whether you’re replacing an old toilet or installing one in a new bathroom, following the right process ensures an efficient, leak-free installation.
Gather your tools and materials
You’ll need an adjustable wrench, putty knife, sponge, bucket, screwdriver, level and hacksaw. Also, gather a new wax ring, cabinet bolts, a toilet supply line and putty or plumber’s putty.
Removing the old toilet
If you are replacing an existing toilet, start by turning off the water supply and flushing to empty as much water as possible. Use a sponge or towel to soak up any water left in the cistern and bowl. Next, disconnect the water supply line and remove the nuts holding the toilet to the floor. Carefully remove the toilet from the flange and place it on a towel or old newspapers to catch any dripping water. Scrape the old wax off the flange with a putty knife to ensure a clean surface for the new installation.
Flange Preparation and Wax Ring Installation
Inspect the flange to ensure that it is in good condition and securely fastened to the floor. If necessary, replace it to prevent leakage. Then place the new wax ring on the flange or around the toilet outlet. The wax ring creates an airtight seal between the toilet and the drain, preventing leaks and odors from escaping.
Positioning and securing the new toilet
Carefully lift the new toilet and align it with the flange locking bolts. Gently lower it onto the wax ring, applying firm but even pressure to create a secure seal. Avoid rocking the toilet, as this may compromise the effectiveness of the wax ring. Once in place, secure the toilet by tightening the nuts on the cabinet bolts. Be careful not to over-tighten, as this may crack the porcelain.
Connecting the water supply and testing
Reconnect the water supply line to the toilet fill valve and turn on the faucet. Allow the flush to fill and flush several times to check for leaks at the base and water supply connections. If necessary, adjust the nuts and bolts for tightness. Also, use a level to confirm that the toilet sits evenly on the floor.
